Welcome senior lawyer Krista K. Smith!

We are thrilled to welcome Krista to our team.

At North Star, Krista will focus on skilled workers, the economic classes, temporary foreign workers and provincial nominee programs. She is a widely-respected labour and employment lawyer who in recent years, conducted workplace investigations and assessments. Krista’s enduring interest in administrative law and love for written advocacy will be put to good use at North Star.

“I am excited to start this next chapter of my career,” said Krista. “The sensibilities I’ve developed while helping employers navigate the law around workplace issues should translate well to the immigration context.”

She continued: “I am so grateful to be welcomed onto a team of knowledgeable immigration lawyers who will help me get up to speed quickly.”

Krista has practiced labour and employment law for more than 10 years and was a partner at her former firm. Before entering private practice, Krista clerked for the judges of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal and articled at a prominent labour and employment firm in Toronto. Krista also dedicated many years as volunteer counsel and caseworker at the Halifax Refugee Clinic before, during and after law school.

“We’ve worked extensively with Krista in the past, including on some complex immigration compliance matters and on some pro bono refugee matters,” said Elizabeth Wozniak, founder of North Star Immigration Law.  “Her thoughtful and analytical approach, depth of knowledge and technical expertise in employment law speak for themselves.”

“In less than two years and in response to client demands, North Star has doubled in size,” said Wozniak. “Krista understands our positive, cooperative and collaborative practice where the sum is greater than the individual parts. She will help us continue providing exemplary service to our amazing clients.”
